Legislation to Boost California Filming
Four pieces of legislation seek to boost funding and protections for
Hollywood.
Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) has introduced AB
261 which
will seek to restore state funding to the Film California First Program.
The measure is sponsored by the Association of Independent Commercial
Producers (AIPC). Critics say this piece of legislation may not be moving
any further this year.
AB 1437, by Assemblymember Audra Strickland (R-Moorpark) will seek to
add further protections for the California Film Commission so that it
is not eliminated in future years. It should have no opposition.
Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) has introduced AB
777,
a spot bill. Specific language should be added to this piece of legislation.
Kevin Murray (D-Los Angeles) is carrying SB 58. Senator Murray has reported
that in the next two weeks he will be amending his bill which will discourage
runaway production. Amendments negotiated with the Governor would create
a tax refund for those motion picture employers who have proven that
they have created jobs in the state.
