Could You Get by on the Minimum Wage?

Fight to Raise California's Minimum Wage Continues

Although the cost of living in the Golden State is sky-high, California's minimum wage is only $6.75 an hour - the lowest of any state on the West Coast. And it is not enough to allow a working family to afford basics like housing and healthcare in California.

Nearly 3,000,000 California workers are making minimum wage. Most of them are the primary breadwinners for their families.

Assembly Bill 48, sponsored by Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D-Mountain View) would raise the minimum wage to $7.75 over the next two years and then index the minimum wage to inflation so that working families are not left behind.

California has not increased its minimum wage since January 2002. But that hasn't stopped the Chamber of Commerce from pressuring legislators to oppose even modest increases in the minimum wage.
