Action Day for a Better CaliforniaOn Wednesday, May 25, union members made history in California. 18,000 union members filled the Capitol in one of the largest protest rallies anyone in Sacramento could remember. Another 10,000 simultaneously filled Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles. Busloads of teachers, nurses, firefighters and scores of other union members descended on the Capitol and Pershing Square chanting, "Hey, hey, ho, ho, Schwarzenegger's got to go." Workers expressed outrage that the Governor has cut education funding, reduced hospital staffing ratios, and has tried to eliminate pensions and survivor benefits for police and firefighters. The Governor has threatened to hold an unnecessary $80 million dollar special election if the legislature doesn't pass his anti-worker agenda. On Wednesday a new statewide poll by the Public Policy Institute shows that 62 percent of California voters are opposed to the Governor's special election and only 33 percent are in favor. |
